As part of our growing decarbonization services your expertise will engage with design teams and facility operations teams to inform decision making that aligns with clients’ energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals. You will provide consulting on whole building performance from early conceptual design through construction and beyond. You will work collaboratively with the design team and a team of engineers to develop physics-based energy models for large commercial buildings, hospitals, higher-education, k-12 and other non-industrial facilities with the intent to understand their existing energy use and identify ways to help them reduce their energy use and associated carbon footprint. The successful candidate will be responsive to time-sensitive and deadline-driven efforts, flexible in meeting multiple priorities, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This position demands excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and creativity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn and implement our OpenStudio/EnergyPlus energy modeling workflow to produce energy models efficiently and make informed recommendations.
  • Develop and modify scripts and other automation tooling and templates to increase the speed, versatility, and cost-effectiveness of our workflow.
  • Consult with clients and design teams on strategies to decarbonize and optimize their projects.
  • Make major design recommendations with little input from senior staff.
  • Develop technical analysis report and presentation deliverables and present to internal and external audiences.
  • Train junior staff to produce energy models. 
  • Manage budgets and timelines for yourself and junior staff conducting energy models.
  • Identify and develop new opportunities, collaborate on proposals and develop new business with new and existing clients.
  • Work and learn with our experienced team of over 50 engineers specializing in commercial and industrial energy efficiency.
  • The position is based out of our Salt Lake City, Utah or Oakland, CA office.
  • This is a hybrid position with the expectation of being in the office a minimum two days/week, ideally every day.

What you Need

  • Energy Engineering - A solid understanding of engineering principles and advanced analytical skills expected of bachelor-level engineering degree or above.  Understanding of major building HVAC equipment/lighting/controls technologies with a specialty in at least one area. Ideally 3-5 years of experience.
  • Energy Modeling - Experience with building energy modeling in EnergyPlus, including:
      • Familiarity with modeling using the OpenStudio application and SDK.
      • Strong preference given to those with experience in coding for OpenStudio/EnergyPlus using Ruby or Python.
      • Knowledge of standard modeling approaches including ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method.
  • Knowledge and implementation experience of national, local energy conservation codes & local laws, and LEED.
  • Experience with custom programming/tool generation.
  • Working knowledge of other BIM programs.
  • Skilled in persistent follow-up to ensure tasks are completed on time and on budget.

Salary range is $100- $150k.

As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Program Manager you will provide administrative, managerial and technical support for energy efficiency programs that kW Engineering administers and implements on behalf of Rocky Mountain Power in Utah, southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. Our approach is best defined as “boardroom to boiler room”.

In this role you will be responsible for a pay-for-performance multi-million-dollar contract and must ensure that we meet our contractual energy savings targets while focusing on ensuring that participants in the program receive exceptional customer service. You will manage, coordinate, provide technical assistance and review the work performed by a team of engineers who will be responsible for energy analysis and technical deliverables. As a Program Manager your input and collaboration will be critical as we develop responses to RFPs, RFQs and RFIs in support of our expanding business.

Key Responsibilities
Program Management
  • Serve as a Program Manager to deliver DSM programs focused on the commercial sector responsible for the overall program performance including engineering deliverables and quality assurances.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for delivery of DSM program to utility customer base. Ensure that customer service KPIs (JD Power, MASTIO) are met.
  • Leverage your experience with mechanical systems and maintaining customer relationships to support their participation in the program. Have the ability to effectively communicate with C-suite decision makers as well as facility operators and technicians.
  • Prepare and present targeted presentations promoting program awareness.
  • Present at local industry association chapters to promote participation in DSM programs.
  • Manage workload of project engineering teams to conduct site visits, engineering analysis and reports.
  • Lead, manager, inspire and mentor staff.
  • Identify and develop new opportunities, collaborate on proposals and develop new business with new and existing clients.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle for local travel. 20-30% travel is anticipated (mileage reimbursement provided) with occasional overnight travel.

  • A Bachelor’s degree is desired by not required.
  • 5 years’ experience in HVAC sales, HVAC estimating, HVAC install/maintenance, or HVAC design experience is required.
  • Past experience with utility DSM Program a plus.
  • Customer facing experience required.

As an Engineer for kW Engineering, you will provide technical support for energy efficiency programs that kW Engineering administers and implements on behalf of Rocky Mountain Power in Utah, Southeast Idaho and Western Wyoming. You will provide technical support with a team of engineers who are responsible for energy analysis and technical deliverables.

The successful candidate will develop and/or review basic and moderate engineering calculations of energy usage and savings. Your role will include conducting fieldwork including verification of existing and replaced equipment and identification of potential projects. This position demands a willingness to learn the energy engineering industry, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and creativity.
